International Graphic Supplies (IGS) has achieved accreditation for its Cobalt SP 800 single-pass inkjet printer’s food-safe ink technology, marking a significant benefit for short-run food packaging according to the business.

Launched last year, the Cobalt SP 800 was developed and built in collaboration with Monmouthshire-based machinery supplier IGS’ Chinese partner for wide-format and label printers, Antel Holding based in Guangzhou.

The new certification, meeting stringent FDA, EN, and GMP standards, will enable businesses to create “visually stunning and fully compliant packaging, which places consumer safety at the forefront of the production process”, according to IGS.

Managing director of IGS, Peter Flynn, said: “After rigorous testing, our Cobalt ink has been certified to meet the highest safety regulations.

“Our water-based, VOC-free ink is formulated to minimise migration, ensuring no harmful substances come into contact with food products. Made from natural materials, it also maintains recyclability, and at £50 per litre, it is very affordable.

“This breakthrough technology enables a wide range of applications, including personalised food packaging and labels.

“Businesses can now elevate their product presentation, enhance brand recognition, and deliver unique consumer experiences, all while adhering to the strictest safety standards and benefiting from cost-effective short-run printing.”

He added: “Our target is to offer an attractive price point of £49,000, including delivery and installation, to help commercial printers diversify their offerings.

“Printing for as low as £0.05 per square metre, the Cobalt SP 800 delivers higher productivity, reliable uptime, and production efficiencies that drive more profits.”

With printing speeds up to 32m/min at 1,200x300dpi, and the ability to print on flat sheets, pre-cut, and pre-made packaging, the Cobalt SP 800 features HP FI1000 thermal inkjet printheads, and fast-drying, water-based CMYK ink.
