Replacing a 17-year-old Zünd PN cutting table, the new machine will finish Discount Displays' wide variety of printed materials, including self-adhesive vinyl, PVC, board, and Corex.
“It’s very good, and we’re very, very pleased we went with it. It’s a good investment that should keep us going for quite a few more years,” Discount Displays general manager Giles Fletcher told Printweek.
“We’ve added a router onto it and have ordered an oscillating blade, which enables us to print and cut card – so we’re looking into new avenues and products to sell with those two items in mind. There are all sorts of possibilities.
“Straight away, we’re making our own packaging by printing and cutting boxes for ourselves, which is saving us an awful lot of money – but there’s a whole host of POS stuff that we can do ourselves now.”
The machine’s selection of creasing tools also helped inform the decision, with 3D cardboard displays a potential growth area for the business.
The new machine was installed in December 2024, with four of the firm’s 20 staff trained up within a few days.
“The two guys that installed it were exceptional. They did the training, too, and it was very comprehensive: they went far beyond what we thought they would,” Fletcher said.
“We had a follow-up visit that ironed out a few little issues, and they’re available all the time on the phone. You really can’t wish for more.”
The business, which has traded from Croydon for over 35 years, will now take advantage of its newfound finishing capabilities by heading out to the market to win new business.
“We’re aways trying to look for more work, and it definitely gives us that capability,” Fletcher said.
“It’s a competitive world out there, as it always is. But we’ll push on: we’re crazy for more work, and we’re pushing all sorts of new avenues and advertising, and constantly reviewing prices with an aim to get more work.
“[The G3] was 110% the right purchase.”
The Zünd's installation follows the installation of a Roland DG TrueVis LG-640 1.6m UV printer at the company in October.
