A lack of performance data could hamper the UK printing industrys efforts to capitalise on future demand.
The DTI-sponsored Competitiveness of the UK Printing Industry report reveals that the apparent productivity gap between the UK and northern Europe previously put as high as 30% is in fact nearer 10%. Capacity utilisation is important in explaining productivity differences the UK has much lower utilisation than most other developed economies, states the report.
It reveals that while prints challenges include a lack of skilled managers and low levels of training, the industry is embracing many characteristics of the so-called new economy.
The report also highlights seven key aims for print going forward, along with an action plan to achieve them. The industry needs to refresh itself and look further than the next job, said BPIF corporate affairs director Mike Hopkins. .
The findings will be revealed at the Print 21 National Business Conference on 14 June. See www.print21.co.uk or call 020 7915 8357 for details.
