TPL wins deals but loses GMCP titles

TPL Printers has renewed its contract with the National Enquirer for another three years.

The Kidderminster web offset firm, which prints 300,000 copies of the magazine each week, has also won the contract to produce IPC monthly title Better Digital Photography in addition to the 10 it was award-ed by the publisher earlier this year (PrintWeek, 24 January).

However, it has also lost work from Guild of Master Craftsman Publications (GMCP), which has moved its entire magazine production to St Ives citing commercial and quality reasons.

St Ives already produced seven titles for the Lewes-based publisher, and has now added Woodworking, Woodturning, the Router and Furniture & Cabinet Making, which it will print from the end of next month.

Printing will be split between St Ives Roche and Andover, with repro done by Graphic Facilities, Icon Reproduction and Ford Graphics.

There have been issues for a number of months, which I have tried to resolve to no avail. St Ives was able to offer us a fantastic deal, said GMCP production manager Stuart Poole.

However, TPL managing director Bob Pitts said he was aware of some quality issues relating to file transfer problems, but was surprised by GMCPs decision.

Our relationship with this customer has been amicable, said Pitts. There have been issues, but we have worked at resolving them.

GMCP has also transferred its repro work for 110 book titles from Singapore to UK repro houses, including CTT Repro, Graphics Kent and Icon Reproduction, although the books will still be printed in Singapore.

Poole said tests had shown that repro quality would improve as a result.
