Ricoh switches off neon signs to mark World Environment Day

Ricoh is switching off its neon signs and billboards for 24 hours today, as it celebrates the UN's World Environment Day.

Ricoh is also undertaking other initiatives to save energy and reduce carbon emissions such as turning off lights, air conditioning and any non-essential equipment, allocating a parking spaces near the entrances to the building for car sharers and encouraging more staff to cycle or walk to work.

It is also encouraging clients to cut their carbon emissions by a kilogram, and has published a list of measures individuals can take to cut their daily carbon emissions, including adjusting the tyre pressure on their cars; cycling to work for the day; and switching of their computer monitor during their lunch hour.

Ricoh has calculated that if everyone in the UK did cut a kilogram from their emissions, it would save 44,000 tonnes of CO2.

Tim Taylor, environmental and compliance manager at Ricoh UK, said: "The hints cover a broad range of simple things that people can do and are designed to raise awareness of the impact that everyday activities have on the environment.

"One kilo of CO2 is equivalent to a balloon with a one metre diameter which makes the scale of the problem really come to life. Following any of our tips will help individuals to do their bit to support positive change."
