What did you produce?
Oasis produced a number of graphics and posters for the event, which took place on 18 May. The most challenging graphic produced was installed alongside the Roundhouse stairwell but there were also 12 posters, eight printed letters placed onto columns and a step-and-repeat board.
What did the job entail?
The stairwell graphic was printed using Oasis’ Mimaki JV33 eco-solvent printer, using Drytac’s ReTac 75 Matte film, with a matte seal placed over the top. It was made up of eight panels, totalling 11x5m overall, with each panel cut using a Zund G3 digital cutter. The graphic, which was designed by Fisher Productions with a “concrete effect”, was printed over a four-day period in early May.
Posters and the 4x3m-wide step-and-repeat board were printed using an EFI Vutek GS3250 onto Forex vinyl and the printed letters were also eco-solvent printed using the Mimaki on ReTac vinyl.
What challenges were overcome?
Oasis project manager Stacey Bearne said it was the stairwell graphic that proved by far and away the trickiest part.
Bearne said: “The stairway graphic was challenging. Dropping the graphic behind the handrail was not easy; we needed to put ladders on there for certain parts to reach the tallest point. That was the biggest difficulty, anything being installed on a stairwell is never straightforward.”
In order to install accurately, the Oasis installation team had to use markers to line up the drops on the wall carefully.
“We didn’t realise the impact it would have until it was actually on the wall though, sometimes it’s the simplest things that look the best,” added Bearne.
What was the feedback?
Fisher Productions lead production manager Claire Butcher said: “The Ubuntu Education Fund were very happy with the end-result and thought the graphics looked great.”
