The lack of a buyer for Jarvis Porters wet-glue label operation in Leeds has forced the company to break up the plant and sell the presses and other machinery off piecemeal.
Less than six weeks after the plant closed, JP appointed valuers and auctioneers Wyles Hardy & Co to handle the private treaty sale. Items available include four Heidelberg offset presses, a MAN Roland 700, and a huge range of pre-press, embossing, cutting, creasing, and foiling kit.
Jarvis Porter announced the collapse of its wet-glue empire in March, citing aggressive pricing by drinks companies. It now makes only a small volume of "high specification" wet-glue labels.
Chief executive Hugh Donaldson insisted in JPs latest report and accounts that "every effort" was made to sell its two wet-glue factories as going concerns. But, while the Glasgow plant was successfully off loaded to Gilmour & Dean (PrintWeek, 7 July), the Parkside Lane, Leeds site could not be sold.
Corporate communications director Neil Farmer said JP would decide what to do with the building in due course.
An Aquaflex 8-colour flexo press from Jarvis Porters Lewes healthcare factory is also up for sale, as it is "surplus to requirements", said Farmer.
