Jade Press buys maiden digital press

Jade Press is aiming to drive growth in its variable data offering and complement its litho setup after investing in its first digital press, a HP Indigo 3500.

The Leeds-based printer has installed the Digital People-supplied machine to provide supplementary capacity for its marketing campaigns, while opening up new revenue streams through digital print.

According to Jade Press managing director Darren Shepherd, the seven-colour Indigo machine has allowed the company to both bring work back in-house and add "another dimension" to the business.

The Indigo, which will run alongside a Komori B2 litho setup, is linked to a Tharstern system and gives Jade Press the ability to offer web-to-print functionality to a range of clients.

Shepherd said: "Some £2m of our business is contracted work with such organisations as local councils and hotel chains.

"Their individual operations can now log into our system, make their own adjustments to the generic print materials that they require, and then order their own specific requirements in terms of quantity."

In addition to offering short-run, variable data work, Jade Press has highlighted the litho-like quality of the Indigo machine to clients. "Marketing campaigns can now straddle both litho and digital print," added Shepherd.

The 47-staff company has already produced a piece of promotional material, which is litho-printed one side and digital the other to showcase the Indigo's print quality.

Shepherd expects the new digital acquisition to help the company continue to enjoy steady, structured growth, with a turnover currently at the £4m mark.

"Many businesses are reducing run lengths, and we therefore believe that there could be no better time to get into digital than right now," he added.
