The family-owned company invested around £230,000 in the press, which was installed at its 2,800sqm premises in Chorley, Lancashire at the end of December.

The machine, a factory-reconditioned Indigo 7600 that prints four colours plus white, has replaced a Series 2 Indigo 5500 that the business had been running for nearly 11 years but has now sold on privately.

“It’s the same sheet size as the 5500 but is a newer, quicker, more production-based machine. It’s also got EPM [Enhanced Productivity Mode], which you can use on certain jobs and makes it faster,” said NB Colour Print managing director Doug Nelson.

“We run four-colour both sides at 1,700 sheets per hour, which is 70% quicker than the 5500.”

He added: “I’m just contacting Tharstern to try and get a connection so that we can run the press through our Tharstern [MIS] and JDF.

“We run quite lot of work through our Kodak Prinergy Connect workflow; I think over 70% of it is now JDF.

“We’ve invested quite a bit of money on this in the last few years with the new Tharstern and connections to our Heidelberg SX 74 and the Kodak workflow. Once we’ve connected the Indigo up, we’ll be a little bit more where we want to be.”

The business also looked at alternatives before ultimately opting to remain with HP for its upgrade.

“We sell our work on the fact that we’ve got good quality equipment and we’ve always thought that the Indigos are a cut above everything else,” said Nelson.

The business also runs Konica Minolta digital printing equipment and various finishing kit from manufacturers including MBO and Duplo.

Serving clients including advertising agencies, local councils, schools and universities, NB Colour Print turns over £1.8m, a figure it is now hoping to grow to £2m.
