Irish newspaper group takes Fujifilm plates in green move

Independent Newspapers (Ireland) has signed up to Fujifilm's recently-launched Brillia LP-NNW "low chemistry" plate in a bid to reduce its environmental impact.

The wholly-owned Independent News & Media (INM) subsidiary will image the plates on its two Krause LS Jet 300 BlueFin CTP lines, which are currently being installed at its CityWest printing plant in Dublin.

Brendan Elebert, production and procurement director at the site, said: "Fujifilm plates have been our plates of choice since opening our CityWest printing plant in November 2000.

"The new LP-NNW plate requires less laser power and uses Fujifilm’s low replenishment chemistry, which results in lower energy and chemistry costs. We’re regularly achieving 270,000 run lengths on the plates."

The plates will be used to print a wide range of newspaper titles and supplements, including the Sunday Independent, Irish Independent and Evening Herald. The CityWest printing plant averages 5.5m copies per week output.

Fujifilm’s Brillia LP-NNW plate, which incorporates its MultiGrain technology, is a high-speed photopolymer plate for violet laser diodes, rated for run lengths up to 200,000 impressions.

Last August independent Scottish newspaper publisher and printer DNG Media became the first UK customer for the Brillia LP-NNW plate.
