Healeys hopes to boost profits after 250,000 spend

Healeys Printers has invested 250,000 over the last 18 months in overhauling its bindery and bringing lamination in-house.

The Ipswich-based printer said it can now provide customers with laminating services following its most recent acquisition – a Jupiter large colour fully-automated B3 laminator, which it bought from Encore Machinery.

Managing director Philip Dodd told PrintWeek that by bringing lamination in-house, the company would reap financial benefits.

"The amount of jobs we do that are laminated will increase because we now have that incentive to offer that kind of work," he said.

"We were spending somewhere between £3,500-£4,000 a month on laminating," Dodd added.

"We did some research into small-format laminators and, after we had done the sums and looked at the cost of the consumables, we realised that it was a viable proposition to bring the work in-house.  Having a laminator in-house gave us increased speed, flexibility and control."

The Jupiter laminator, which has been installed for a month, features an automatic detection system that picks up misfeeds and roller that smoothes uneven digital stock before it is laminated.

In the last 18 months, Healeys has improved its facilities with the purchase of a BQ470jdf perfect binder from GAE several months ago, followed up in April with a new MB38 Pitstop folder and creaser.

Dodd added the purchase of the laminator drew a line under its investment programme. "We are not spending any more," he said.
