GPMU members vote for action at St Ives

GPMU members at St Ives Andover have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action short of a strike and stoppages.

The ballot followed a dispute over this years pay round, with St Ives Web managing director David Emeny stating that the firm couldnt pay an annual increase without cutting costs or increasing flexibility (PrintWeek, 4 September).

GPMU deputy general secretary Tony Burke said the firm had been told of the result and had asked for further talks, which he expected to take place this week.

No one at St Ives Web was available for comment as PrintWeek went to press.

Meanwhile, St Ives buoyant book-printing subsidiary, Clays, has taken on eight new apprentices.

Peter Willard of the GPMUs East of England branch said the recruitment was bucking the trend in the industry.

Clays handled the UK printing of the latest Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and the four earlier Harry Potter titles, as well as David Beckhams new book.
