Cambridge-headquartered Domino manufactures inkjet printing and coding systems. The former PLC was itself acquired by Japanese giant Brother in 2015.

The group said that the acquisition would bring a range of proven solutions into its portfolio, and customers would benefit from Lake Image Systems’ “industry-leading expertise”, creating production lines with “greater intelligence and product accuracy”.

The two companies have collaborated on data verification projects for more than two decades.

In a statement, Domino CEO Robert Pulford said the two businesses shared many of the same core values.

“Our acquisition of Lake Image Systems will expand our coding and marking hardware and software portfolio and further enhance our ability to deliver high-performance, integrated coding solutions,” he said.

Pulford said that the use of print quality and variable data verification systems would help customers reduce waste, be more efficient, and develop “smart, sustainable manufacturing operations”.

Tring-headquartered Lake Image Systems was established in 1994 and featured in Printweek’s ‘Best of British’ series at the end of last year. Its high-speed, intelligent camera systems are used by customers across a wide range of applications including commercial print, mailing, labels and packaging.

Founders Martin Keats, Paul Smith, and Paul Stinson will remain within the 50-employee business as a subsidiary of Domino. It will become part of Domino’s Strategic Business Development unit.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
