Compact dailies in spotlight

Editors of The Independent, The Times and The Guardian are to go head-to-head on the great compact question next month.

Simon Kelner, Robert Thomson and Alan Rusbridger will debate the issue of going tabloid at The Stationers' Livery Hall on 8 November at 6pm.

Kenny Campbell, editor of freesheet Metro will also take part, while Radio 4's Jenni Murray chairs the discussion.

The debate comes just over a year after The Independent shook up the newspaper world with the launch of its compact edition in September 2003.

The Times quickly followed suit, while The Guardian has announced plans to switch to a three-quarter size Berliner format in 2006.

Fujifilm Graphic Systems, Sun Chemical and Stora Enso are sponsoring the debate. Tickets, priced 20, are available from 020 7246 0988 or admin@stationers.org.
