Expansion in contracts from the financial sector has forced the firm to invest in the press and bring on board three Mac and printer operatives and two finishers, taking staff numbers to 45.
The installation last week of the second iGen3 came as 3D Digital reached the end of a 60,000 run of 120pp A6 personalised horoscopes for a promotion organised for the Daily Mail.
Managing director David Moyse said he had been "very pleased" with the volume for the deal, which offered a book by celebrity astrologer Jonathan Cainer, personalised according to the reader's birthday and time of birth.
Delivery of the iGen3 comes less than a year after buying its first iGen3 at Drupa.
Moyse said that the spend was "a couple of months" earlier than expected due to increasing work from the City, although he declined to name any clients.
"We're right in Docklands so we're in an ideal position to offer a 24-hour service to the financial sector. They throw files at us in the afternoon and we deliver them back the next day," he said.
Moyse said he estimated the "realistic capacity" of the iGen3 to be around 1.5m pages per month.
"We bought the second iGen3 because we were tipping over capacity on the last one, but now we've got a massive capacity to sell into," he added.
The firm also runs a DocuColor 6060, while the first iGen3 replaced two DocuColor 2060s.
