A brand new entrant to this category, ec2i takes the award at its first attempt for presenting the perfect combination of creative and repro skills to the judges. Working primarily in the highly demanding fashion and home shopping markets has clearly honed ec2i's skills, as demonstrated by its work on the Crew Clothing Spring 2009 catalogue. Like many clothing companies, Crew adds and drops garments for various reasons before a range launches. For Crew's Spring 2009 catalogue, a sample blazer that went on the photoshoot was an early prototype featuring a striped pattern that was subsequently changed for the production garment. Essex-based ec2i removed the stripes from the original image, shot the new garment on a member of staff in its own digital studio and then cut out the new stripes and comped them onto the blazer. The result convinced our judges, who congratulated ec2i on its "exceptionally realistic work to create new clothing, complete with creases and folds!".

Congratulations to the in-house pre-press department at Future Publishing, whose 19 staff are responsible for handling all repro requirements across the publisher's 80-plus titles. In the past year, the pre-press team worked on the launch of both The Knitter and Triathlon Plus, providing creative input from an early stage. The montage compiled by one of Future's experienced retouchers for the opening spread of Triathlon Plus caught the judge's eyes, but it was the high standard across all four of its work samples that won it this commendation.
