The publisher’s in-house department presented a "fantastic" array of work ranging from a ‘lookbook’ for Heal’s to Jamie Oliver’s monthly publication, Jamie magazine. The repro challenges involved in producing the lookbook included swatch-matching, re-colouring, colour balancing and restaging lifestyle shots, with John Brown’s colour managers taking many days to source products and samples with the utmost care. Meanwhile, Jamie departed from tradition by being printed on uncoated Sappi Tauro paper rather than the gloss paper usually used for food magazines. This presented the challenge of making the food photography vibrant and inviting, for which the company enlisted Sappi and Artisan Press to create fingerprinted, custom profiles and plate curves for the magazine to enhance the results dramatically on this difficult substrate. A similar problem arose for John Brown when producing the John Lewis Autumn 2010 fashion catalogue. Again, Tauro uncoated stock proved challenging, particularly in concert with the muted autumnal shades of the clothing and gloomy weather of the location shoot. The company was able to use its expertise in this area by selecting a special uncoated profile and by using the bespoke GMG profile developed for Jamie. This year’s award winners are understandably proud of a project in which very few of the studio and location shots were printed exactly as they were posed, and the whole project was turned around in three weeks by a small team of dedicated workers.
