Pitney Bowes APS

CDMS director Martyn Viquerat has increased efficiency and been able to downsize without affecting productivity thanks to his new inserter

What is it?
A Pitney Bowes advanced productivity series (APS) inserter.

What does the machine do?
It delivers high-speed insertion, operational efficiency, and maximum productivity to reduce cost per mail piece.

Why did you choose this particular machine?
We needed an insertion system that was not only fast, but could offer a wide range of tolerance. Its modular design lets us configure the number of inserting stations and easily re-configure as future needs change. In addition, the file-based direct connect operating system can provide us with a mail piece status for each mail pack processed.

Did you look at any other similar machines?

Yes, but we believed only the Pitney Bowes inserters could reliably handle our paper transport demands alongside the highest levels of mail piece integrity.

Why did you make the purchase?
We are processing time-critical, automated mailing campaigns to very tight schedules and incorporating increasing variability for clients. Our remote shopping clients are getting heavily into part catalogues where only relevant sections are mailed to each customer. This is precisely where the transport tolerance and flexibility of the APS inserters come into their own.

What features do you particularly like?
The inserters enable a significant reduction in total parts usage, while increasing capacity. Also, the machine virtually eliminates paper jams, stoppages or spoils with positive paper control path architecture.

Is there anything that you dislike?

I’d like it to be faster and less expensive.

Is there anything that you wish it had that it doesn’t?

The APS inserter has met our expectations. As future product developments and enhancements are brought
to market, we shall adopt technology from Pitney Bowes
that maintains our position at the leading edge of
the market.

How fast is it?
It can operate at speeds of up to 22,000 pieces per hour.

How reliable is it?
To date, reliability has met with our expectations.

What’s the quality like?
The quality and consistency are excellent.
How easy is it to use?
Very. The machine is a low labour intensive system that does not require highly trained operators.

How much time or money has it saved?

We have been able to consolidate operations into one site and have reduced our production equipment from 32 enclosing machines to just 19.

Would you say that it offers value for money?
Yes. Pitney Bowes were able to provide extremely competitive and flexible leasing options.

Were there any difficulties experienced during the installation or after?

No, as we had a training and installation plan that allowed us to start maximising the benefits as soon as possible.

What about the pre- and after-sale service?
Their on site service support and technical assistance helped us maximise productivity.

Who do you think the machine is right for?
It would greatly benefit companies producing high volumes of both transactional-based and/or direct mail.

Under what circumstances would you buy another?
As our business develops, we need to consider increasing our capacity while also demanding maximum production.

Supplier’s Response
Steve Basnett, account manager for Pitney Bowes, says: “The cornerstone of the investment is based around APS – advanced productivity system high-speed production inserters. The three APS inserters ordered by CDMS can operate at speeds of up to 22,000 mail pieces per hour. Significantly, each inserter is configured with a new ‘twist-no-twist module’ that facilitates the processing of various types of print stream orientations without the need to change the application. CDMS see this as a key advantage in processing the various work types and third-party promotional mailings.”
