Yesterday's musings about the potential benefit to print of the upcoming General Election resulted in a couple of phone calls about one source of potentially problematic printed matter.
To whit: who will print promo materials for the BNP? The party is campaigning hard in a number of key marginals, and after picking up two seats in last year's European elections - resulting in an appearance on BBC's Question Time for leader Nick Griffin - is now aiming to gain a place in Westminster this time around.
I've already been told of two printcos that have politely declined the opportunity, one of which came close to plating up a job before realising what it was, resulting in an abrupt volte-face. I'm not entirely sure whether all political communications still require the name of the publisher and printer to appear on them by law. Must check that out.
Also, what if the party decided to use the type of hybrid print and mailing service whereby users can just log in and order via the web, such as Royal Mail's Mailshots Online? What would happen then?
It seems that this is the one job the industry at large would be rather relieved to see go overseas.
