Metsa Board cuts emissions with opening of Kyro mill biopower plant

Metsa Board has opened a new Euro 50m biopower plant at its Kyro mill in Kyrokoski, Finland.

The plant will shift Metsä Boards' dependence on fossil natural gas to by moving the Kyro mill towards CO2-neutral biopower, generated from discarded wood, such as bark and log chips.

The Finnish company expects an immediate reduction of 100,000 CO2 tonnes a year and believes the new plant will help towards halving the carbon footprint of its folding boxboard Carta Elega, and Avanta Prima and Cresta wallpaper products.

The biopower plant will provide heating for the nearby district of Hameenkryo as well as supplying electricity and heat to the Kyro mill.

Metsä Board chief executive Mikko Helander said: "We have been working on improving energy efficiency and sustainability of our mills. The new biopower plant will help us in these efforts, as well as meeting our target of cutting CO2 emissions by 30% across operations by 2020 compared to 2009 levels."
