Viable quantities and a no-show

Jo Francis tracks down the solutions to your technical troubles

Q I am trying to find a printer who has the capability of laser printing mono user manuals with card covers and perfect binding them inline in one process. The documents in question range between 120pp and 600pp on a lightweight stock. The requirement would be weekly and would range from five to 50 documents in each weekly run. The issue I have is that the set-up charges for five documents makes the suppliers I have approached not viable for the low quantities. I would like to discuss a contract rate with an appropriate supplier. Can anyone point me in the direction of some suitable suppliers with this capability?

A Forum stalwart Bill Cheesman of TBC Print Services in Dorset (01258 488990) must be praised for his alacrity in responding online with an offer of help on this one. In addition, here are some companies that specialise in training manual-type products, along with on-demand book printers who are also equipped to produce the sort of thing you’re after: KnowledgePoint in Reading 0118 918 1500 www.knowledgepoint.co.uk; PMT Digital in St Ives, Cambridgeshire 01480 493666 www.pmtdigital.co.uk; Printondemand-worldwide in Peterborough 01733 237867; CPI Antony Rowe, which specialises in ultra short runs and single-copy printing at its Chippenham site 01323 434700 uk.cpibooks.com; and Lightning Source 0845 121 4555 www.lightningsource.com. You could also try nationwide outlets, such as Service Point (www.servicepointuk.com), as I believe some branches have the capability you require.

Q I’m hoping you can advise when the next Digital Print Expo show is on?

A The show became Total Print! Expo (TPE), but this year’s event, which was originally scheduled to take place last month, was shelved by organiser IIR over the summer when it became clear that key exhibitors were unwilling to commit in the current economic circumstances. Next year is, of course, an Ipex year (18-25 May, www.ipex.org), so I’m not sure whether IIR will try to reprise it in 2010 or not. Having said that, IIR managing director Nicky Mason did say the plan was to do just that. Last I heard, IIR was looking for industry feedback on TPE’s format and frequency.
