In a supply bind and digital news

Jo Francis tracks down the solutions to your technical troubles

Q Can anyone recommend a consistently reliable supplier for bespoke binders and folders: polypropylene and/or card?
Karen Swain, via printweek.com

A As soon as this request appeared on printweek.com, suggestions popped up immediately from the ever-helpful members of the Help Line community. ‘Ivor Binder’ gave a glowing endorsement of Scarborough’s Duraweld (01723 584091, www.duraweld.co.uk), while ‘Edna Bag’ praised the service offered by The Binding Partnership in Billericay (01277 633160, www.thebindingpartnership.co.uk). I then also chipped in with a further suggestion of Heanor’s Easibind International (01773 761341, www.easibind.com). Hopefully, one of those three suggestions will fit the bill perfectly for you.

Q We are currently working on a project to produce a limited-edition newspaper of around 200 copies. We would like to print the job digitally, but on proper newsprint. The majority of printers that we have contacted have claimed that newsprint paper is too thin to run on digital presses, but the prices they are quoting for printing the job litho are too much for us to afford. The specification is for a standard broadsheet-size newspaper, 15pp.
Sarah, via email

A I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume 15pp is some sort of typo. Anyhow, your requirement should be perfectly possible via one of the following: for digital newspaper printing try Stroma (www.stromaltd.co.uk), which has been producing papers this way for a decade. Its London facility printed its five-millionth newspaper last year. It’s also worth checking out The Newspaper Club, which has the strapline ‘Here to help anyone make their own newspaper’. They have a clever tool called ARTHR to make it simple to create the pages, or you can upload your own PDFs. Find out more at www.newspaperclub.co.uk, though I should point out that this project is still in beta-testing. Newspaper Club is actually printing conventionally, using downtime at conventional newspaper printers. It’s quite a clever model.

Plate punch joy
A somewhat belated catch-up on an old request from Bill Cheesman, who was searching for a plate punch (PrintWeek, 26 February). I’m happy to report that Bill was fixed up via forum member ‘Rola Cola’, but I’d also like to thank Tony Henson, John Wyatt and Roger Curry for their offers of help too.
