York rounds off 12m spend with Komori web

York Mailing has completed a 12m raft of investment with the commissioning of a new Komori System 38 32pp web at its factory in Elvington, York.

The company, which prints a mix of promotional print including media inserts, door drops and leaflets, is aiming to add greater flexibility to its operations including the ability to enter the publications sector.

The 32pp heatset press replaces a 16pp MAN Rotoman 40. Prior to purchase, chairman Mike Newbould told Komori that "if the press couldn't match the folder change speed, the plate change speed, the colour preset speed and the wastage levels of our 16pp machines, we weren't having it".

"But it met every target easily and the fact that it's a 625mm cutoff rather than the 630mm we were running before means we save 5mm every time the cylinder goes round. The savings are mind-boggling," he added.

The installation of the System 38 prompted a complementary investment in pre-press and post-press, with the purchase of a Screen PlateRite Ultima with auto-loader and Palamides paper processing lines for the company's MBO T700 and T800 buckle folders.

York Mailing also completed a move to a PDF workflow, driven by Dalim Twist, some six weeks before the new press was commissioned.

York Mailing which operates from twin sites in Northampton and York has experienced "very rapid" growth since it was established by Newbould and chief executive Chris Ingram in 1998.

"We began with secondhand kit, but we had a focus on customer service which is what matters in this market," said Ingram.
