Xerox calculates office print's green footprint

Xerox has launched what it claims is the first-ever "green" calculator, which can work out the environmental impact of a company's document systems.

The online tool, which calculates the levels of energy, waste and CO2 produced by in-house document handling, has been developed to show companies of any size where they can reduce the environmental impact of their Xerox and other branded office equipment, and save costs across their business.

The Sustainability Calculator software is available though Xerox Office Services. It evaluates the environmental profile of a particular office by using algorithms combined with document assessment research, factoring in energy and paper use, the volumes of solid and water waste produced and the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Illustrating the calculator's accuracy, Xerox claims it is capable of providing data on the impact of printing on two sides of a paper or of printing on different paper types.

The calculator is able to assess the environmental impact of document technology kit produced by Xerox, as well as printers, copiers and document devices made by other manufacturers.

Once a customer has been provided with a "sustainability evaluation" of their operations, Xerox will advise them how to save energy and reduce waste.

A scaled down version of the full calculator is available at www.xerox.com/thoughtleadership, where visitors are given a preview of the service and some tips on making their office "greener".
