Word of mouth precedes Elliot venture

James Elliots plans for his new venture appear more modest than for his ill-fated Equator gravure project.

Elliot is understood to have put out tenders to a number of manufacturers related to "Project Suburb".

Details are confidential, but PrintWeek has learned that the tender includes sheetfed presses and possibly a web, along with associated finishing equipment. His backers are unknown.

"I think he wants to prove to people he can do it. We're taking it with a pinch of salt and will proceed with caution. He strung everyone along last time," said one supplier.

In February, PrintWeek revealed that the former Howitt chief executive had resurfaced as a director of two new companies: Plano-Intag (Holdings) and IP Direct.

Elliot had been mooted as a possible purchaser of Nottingham's Premier Print, but the company was bought by Derby's npm Group (see Profile p23). There is also speculation that his former Howitt colleague Dave Weiss will join the new venture. Weiss is no longer working at Scorpio Print Finishing. Elliot was unavailable for comment.

A new 20m industrial and distribution park is being built on the site originally earmarked for Equator in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
