US academics seek standard

American academics have launched a project to develop a new standard for soft proofing, saying that current checks are outdated, inaccurate and subjective.

The Graphic Communication Institute (GCI) of California Polytechnic State University plans to evaluate software, computer displays and video cards used in reproduction of colour-accurate images.

The Specifications for the Application of Image Displays project (SAID) will produce an "objective and measurable" test of the performance of soft-proofing kit and methods.

"Current methods of display certification rely on subjective visual evaluations and imprecise data built upon a 30-year-old colour measurement system widely regarded as inadequate," GCI director Hal Hinderliter told the International Prepress Association conference in Illinois.

He added that SAID would help printers to continue to influence new display technologies.
