Upsized London Sport magazine is good news for printer

London Sport is moving to a larger format and upgrading its paper stock across the magazine, in a move that will increase the value of its printing contract.

Publisher Patrick Kelly told printweek.com: "The reason we're relaunching on a larger size is because advertisers like the larger format and readers want more content, and this means we can fit more content with the same number of pages."

Kelly said the magazine, owned by Echo Publishing, has a long-term supply contract with a printer, but he declined to provide details.

The 100,000-run monthly glossy magazine, which is perfect bound, is distributed free in gyms within the bounds of the M25.

Kelly said the publication would move to 80gsm silk paper throughout the book. Previously the magazine used 90gsm glossy paper at the front and 65gsm Solaris text paper, similar to newsprint, at the back.

Although the magazine will remain at 64pp, the larger paper size and better paper stock mean that the printing contract is worth more.

"It's a big order for [the printer]," Kelly said.
