The basis for the calculations is the ten elements of the Carbon Footprint Framework for Paper and Board Products, developed by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI).
UPM environmental manager Päivi Rissanen said: "We want to provide our customers with data in a consistent form to assist them in estimating their own impact on the environment as accurately as possible."
The calculations are available as part of voluntary environmental product declaration scheme Paper Profile. It includes information on different environmental parameters, as well as product composition.
The data used in UPM's calculations is based on annual averages of specific paper machine lines, and the figures refer to fossil CO2 emissions.
CEPI's Carbon Footprint Framework for Paper and Board Product was launched in November 2007.
It includes carbon sequestration in forests, carbon in forest products and greenhouse gas emissions from forest product manufacturing facilities.
UPM to offer carbon footprint calculator
UPM has launched optional carbon footprint calculations for its paper products in a bid to encourage customers to estimate their own impact on the environment.
