University of Essex hands 2m contract to Pureprint

The University of Essex has appointed Pureprint for a five-year contract worth up to 2m.

The Uckfield-based environmental printer was chosen from 26 possible companies, with the organisation praising its quality, value and environmental credentials.

The university operates an in-house digital and litho printing unit, which produces part of its small-run requirements. However, it required a partner for large-format work, prospectus printing, annual reviews and various brochures and marketing collateral.

Anthony Rowell, business development manager at Pureprint, said: "We're trying to do a lot of work with universities because in a credit crunch, more people are more likely to stay in further education.

"We have a great relationship with the University of Essex and their way of thinking matched our own. I think it was our environmental credentials and cost effectiveness that won us the contract," added Rowell.

Keith Mason, deputy director of estate management at the university, said: "Out of the 26 companies that applied to tender, we shortlisted four. Pureprint's scores across each part of the contract award criteria were consistent and to a high level.

Mason added that he was especially impressed on a site visit to the printer. "Pureprint's approach to environmental best practice and overall social responsibility were obvious from our visit. Their open and honest approach was welcomed by the contract award panel," he said.

The University of Essex is ranked ninth in the country for research. It has three campuses and around 9,000 students from over 130 countries.
