Data Mail Solutions (DMS) has enhanced its firepower by installing a second Colorstream 6000 continuous-feed inkjet press from Canon.

Commissioned around four weeks ago following installation earlier this year, the additional press – bought direct from Canon – followed the first Colorstream 6000 that was installed in June 2023 after the Crawley, West Sussex-based business moved into a new 2,800sqm factory.

DMS sales director Gurpreet Gill told Printweek: “Being a reel-fed unit, the volume we can get through in 24 hours has substantially increased, and we’ve got the reassurance of having a second press, which we can run simultaneously.

“It’s always great to have a backup, issues can arise at any moment, so having this additional press is massively beneficial for us and our clients.

“And that mirrors our two reel-fed Hunkelers, which can finish the reels as we need. So essentially, we can now run back-to-back 24 hours as and when we require it.”

DMS also operates two sheetfed Canon machines – a varioPrint iX3200 and a varioPrint i300 – as well as an imagePress V1000 toner machine and high-speed enclosing lines from CMC, including a fourth line that was installed last year.

The company also re-added litho print to its portfolio last year after taking on a five-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75, sourced via Exel Printing Machinery and financed through Close Brothers Asset Finance.

“We’ve had some big business wins, during Q3 and Q4 last year and the beginning of this year. The volume of what we are producing has gone up massively,” said Gill.

“Alongside our transactional clients, our direct mail and print has increased also. And with the elections coming up, we’ve produced close to three million items in a very short space of time.

“So we’re able to service all of our clients at the same time and maintain the same level of service throughout. But because we’ve taken on this new business, we’ve without a doubt got the firepower to match it now, in all areas.”

On its relationship with Canon, Gill added: “The training was fantastic. We’ve got a great relationship with them; they’re always very helpful, happy to help us and be on site, and their callout service is fantastic as well.”

Employing 35 staff, DMS serves clients in a raft of areas including the investment sector and retail. The company is helmed by a senior team including CEO Simon Smode and operations director Alan Street.
