A workshop series curated for type enthusiasts aims to unlock the secrets of centuries of typographic mastery at St Bride Foundation.

Called TypEd and held during November, each of the three workshops aims to give a deeper understanding of typographic processes, while encouraging creativity.

Participants can tap into St Bride Foundation’s rich 130-year legacy of type education, from its Victorian Printing School origins to today’s role as a beacon for the typographically passionate.

Leading the inaugural term is Marie Boulanger, design lead at Monotype. She has a strong background in branding and type design, working for agencies and foundries across Europe and North America.

Boulanger has clients including Fedrigoni and Adobe, and her work has been seen in publications like Print Magazine and Dezeen, while she has presented research at TypeCon and Adobe Max and lectured at the University of Reading and University of the Arts London.

Following Boulanger is Jim Sutherland, founder of award-winning Studio Sutherl&.

Sutherland studied at Norwich School of Art and has worked with a range of clients, including the Natural History Museum, Agatha Christie Limited, Prostate Cancer UK, Start-rite shoes, and National Museums Scotland.

He is a visiting Professor in Design at Norwich University of the Arts and has spoken at the London Design Festival, the Design Indaba in South Africa and Birmingham Design Festival. He is also vice chair of The Typographic Circle.

Astrid Stavro will complete the term. She is an award-winning creative with over two decades of leadership in design. She studied at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, later directing her Barcelona studio and co-founding the award-winning Atlas consultancy with major clients like Elephant magazine and the Barcelona Design Museum.

After joining Pentagram as a partner in 2018, Stavro worked with Vitra, Tate, and National Portrait Gallery before founding her own practice in 2022.

She commented: “TypEd provides an exploration into typography’s rich heritage and creative possibilities. With access to St Bride Foundation’s extensive archives and guidance from esteemed industry experts, participants will deepen their typographic understanding and refine their skills to the highest level.”

The TypEd series will cover the gamut of typography, with topics including typeface design, public lettering, calligraphy, type history, type theory, sign writing, graffiti, technology and production, and illustrative type.

Each workshop will include an introduction to the topic and may be supported by presentations, interactive demonstrations, practical skill-building, and constructive feedback critiques.

Workshops will be complemented by St Bride Foundation’s library collections, including the world’s largest collection of over 10,000 type specimens.

Ticket prices are £200, £175 for Friends of St Bride Foundation, or £125 for students. Dates are 1 November for Boulanger’s session, 22 November for Sutherland, and 29 November for Stavro’s workshop.

A limited number of spots are available for the workshops, which all run from 2-7pm. For more information, visit: sbf.org.uk/whats-on/category/typedprogramme/.
