Toplis first became involved with the university 27 years ago when he was the managing director of print and design franchise Kall Kwik UK.
The management school was developing a franchise elective at the time, and was put in touch with Toplis via a mutual connection.
He subsequently worked with the then-dean of the business faculty, Ellie Hamilton, to create a franchise module.
Toplis told Printweek: “Since then I have done at least one lecture a year and presented an award for the best franchise project on an annual basis.
“I think the first year there were a dozen or so participants. This year it is approaching 100.”
He added: “Obviously, I am very chuffed – it is a humbling experience to be recognised for works done so I’m really thrilled.
“I am equally delighted that after all these years of lecturing and promoting franchising to the students one of the recent intake is in the process of signing up for a franchise (not one of mine) which is fantastic.”
The Bardon Group is a specialist franchise operator and its portfolio includes Kall Kwik, Recognition Express, and Techclean.
