Swinford pulls the plug on ScotPrint

The viability of regional trade shows has again come under the spotlight after the cancellation of ScotPrint, which was due to take place in Glasgow in October.

The shows organiser, Trade Events, said it hadnt attracted the critical mass needed for success. Director Gary Swinford said: "I think the show would have been disappointing to exhibitors and visitors."

Litho Supplies joint managing director Gerry Mulvaney said the cancellation was "symptomatic of the malaise in the industry".

"Im disappointed but not surprised," he said. "It was clear that it would be hard to get off the ground."

Mulvaney said it was unlikely that Litho Supplies would show at two autumn exhibitions in London Octobers Digital Solutions OnDemand and Novembers Digital Print World due to the expense and also because they were near the end of the financial year. Litho Supplies is more likely to run smaller targeted events.

The Scottish Print Employers Federation (SPEF) said the cancellation of ScotPrint was indicative of a tough period for print firms and suppliers. Director Jim Raeburn said: "Industry suppliers have very generous provisions for exhibitions, but theres a tendency to focus on the large ones."

However, he said that although it would have been nice to have a show for Scotland, ScotPrints cancellation wouldnt impact on the industry: "Theres always a large group of Scottish printers going to shows in Birmingham and Dsseldorf."

As a result of ScotPrints cancellation, Litho Supplies has decided to invest in digital print and CTP equipment for its Livingston office.

Swinford said Trade Events remained committed to the Scottish market and planned for Glasgow to host one of a series of local events called Print on the Move.
