Speculation over CVC bid for Trinity Mirror

There is speculation that CVC Capital Partners could launch a 2bn bid for Trinity Mirror.

The bid, mooted in The Sunday Telegraph, follows CVC's purchase in September of the printing division of BASF and Swedish ink manufacturer ANI Printing Inks (PrintWeek, 7 October 2004).

Both Trinity Mirror and CVC declined to comment on the speculation, and news agency Reuters quoted an unnamed source at CVC who denied the bid.

CVC and other finance businesses have already showed strong interest in moving into the newspaper industry, signalling that the sector is healthier than its declining circulation figures may suggest.

CVC mounted a joint bid with Daily Mail & General Trust for the Telegraph Group earlier in the year, but withdrew after rival bidders 3i and the Barclay brothers pushed the price too high.
