Southernprint defends emission controls

Southernprint managing director Stephen Clark is absolutely confident that the Poole web offset printer has nothing to fear from concerns about its emissions.

The Borough of Pooles Consumer Protection Services department has scheduled a third public meeting this year to discuss the firms progress. Although Clark was unaware of the 2 September meeting when contacted by PrintWeek this week, he said the firm had installed probably the best available emission control system in the world at its site in the Dorset towns Upton district.

Jeff Morley, team manager for Consumer Protection Services, said residents had been concerned about emissions and noise from the plant, particularly at night. But Southernprint had already made progress on reducing dust emissions.

Clark said he hadnt received any complaints about noise levels. He was aware that some locals had complained to the council, but never about any noise associated specifically with Southernprint.

Morley said locals had also been concerned about possible long-term health effects from the plant, but he had enlisted the medical expertise of Pooles Primary Care Trust and it hadnt identified higher occurrence of illnesses such as asthma.

Southernprint has had to apply for an integrated pollution prevention and control permit from the local authority under new EU requirements. Its previous permit only applied to emissions to air, but the new one extends to emissions to water and to noise.

Morley said the two previous meetings had each attracted 150-200 people.

It [Southernprint] is based on an industrial estate pretty close to a residential area. Hopefully the improvements the company has put in place will reassure residents that things are better and the remaining issues will be dealt with.
