Smurfit UK has been fined 100,000 over the death
of a paper maker at its Burnley paper and board mill last year.
The company pleaded guilty at Burnley Crown Court after being prosecuted by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) under Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
The accident took place on 29 January 2000 at the Burnley mill.
The 29-year-old operative died before he could be released from the machinery.
Mike Wilcock, head of the HSEs paper and printing national sector group, described the incident as
an appalling mishap that should not have been allowed to happen.
Papermarc took over the Smurfit mill in June last year, but was not legally implicated in the case.
