Silicon launches Xeus server

Silicon Systems has launched Xeus, a new graphics server that, it claims, outperforms comparable products from Dell and Apple.

PDF Engine, a chooser level device that can create PDFs 30-50 times faster than Adobe Acrobat Distiller running on a local machine, is bundled for free.

The firm supplies the server with Linux as standard, but can also provide a Windows 2000 OS.

Prices start from 1,975 for the basic configuration with a single 2GHz Xeon processor, 256MB RAM, 120GB of RAID level 5 storage and gigabit Ethernet.

Options include up to 2TB (terabytes) of RAID storage, dual processors up to 2.8GHz each and up to 12GB of RAM.

The firm has installed several hundred machines since last summer.
