Rufford Printing brings platemaking in-house with Vector spend

Commercial printer Rufford Printing has brought its platemaking in-house after installing a Vector chemistry-free CTP system.

The system produces up to 20 plates an hour using Presstek's Freedom plates, which support run lengths up to 25,000 impressions.

Brian Smith, managing director at the Mawdsley, Lancashire-based company, said the business had wanted to expand its four-colour printing service, but had been limited by a two-colour press and conventional platemaking.

He said: "We already outsourced about 10% of our platemaking for the more challenging jobs, but it was time-consuming as we had to allow between 24 to 48 hours turnaround."

According to Smith, the Vector is ideally suited for the smaller commercial printer, as it provides "an affordable, small-format, chemistry-free option".

Smith said it also has a small environmental footprint as the company does not have to buy and dispose of chemicals.

"The Freedom Pro plates do not require baking, special cleaning fluids or gumming, resulting in great press performance, as well as less waste. It's also quick and simple to maintain," he added.
