The new iGen was installed in May and replaced a Xerox Docucolor 8002, which the Greenwich, London-based direct mail firm had been running for around seven years. It will run alongside four-year-old iGen 150 providing a variety of mail-related and digital printing services for customers.
According to managing director Robin Sumner, the machine was selected following an assessment of the market.
“Capacity has grown for us at Romax which has led to the need for a second piece of kit to keep up with our original iGen,” said Sumner. “We required consistency in print and also a contingency machine so that if one fails, the other can pick up the load without a variation in quality.
“We went out to the market and did our analysis, but it did not take us long to conclude that other manufacturers could not provide what we wanted. The iGen 5 has the extra-long sheet capacity and higher throughput that we required.
“No manufacturer is perfect, but Xerox has always been proactive when things have gone awry for us with one of their machines. There was a small hiccup in the installation of the iGen 5 that they were very quick to fix – we have never been disappointed in their service.”
The iGen 5 digital press, launched in 2015, has an optional fifth print station that can take orange, green, blue, white or clear inks. It prints at speeds up to 150ppm with duplex capabilities and at a resolution of 2,400dpi.
Romax configured its press with the additional thick stock kit, an option that boosts the iGen 5’s substrate capabilities from the standard 350gsm up to 550gsm. Sumner said it would open up the range of products the firm can offer to its customers, such as postcards.
Sumner added that he hoped to double the company's £4m turnover over the next five years.
He said: “The kind of clients we are attracting are increasingly of the blue-chip variety and the work they are requesting is becoming more detailed and complicated. We have considerable growth plans because of this, focusing heavily on data-driven jobs.”
Romax employs 35 members of staff on circa 930sqm premises. Its print capabilities are further supported by two Nuvera production printers, also from Xerox.
