Publishing magazine looks to become technology testbed

A magazine launching early next year for publishers is looking for new innovations to trial.

Independent Publishers Magazine will be launched by Econtra Publishing to coincide with the Publishing Expo 2010 event.

According to publisher Jon Barrett, the title is aimed at "making magazines make money" in a time when the print and publishing industries are facing increasing struggles.

Barrett told PrintWeek that the publication would have a 'hands-on' approach to new innovations in software, printing and finishing – among other areas.

He said: "We want this to be like a research testbed for the publishing industry so if anyone wants to talk to me about new finishing, paper or software I am open to exploring anything.

"We will be writing about technologies that will increase revenue and reduce costs and if these technologies are proven to achieve that we will adopt them.

"I have been publishing magazines for 20 years. I always wanted one source to go to for practical information for launching and maintaining a title."

Econtra is currently in negotiations with a number of printers regarding the title, which will be available in a printed version in the UK. In the US it is likely to be available in a print-on-demand format, while other worldwide users can opt for the digital version.

The title will be available once every two months and subscription fees are yet to be determined.

Econtra will be exhibiting at Publishing Expo, which will be held on February 24-25 at London Olympia 2, and will be available to discuss ideas at the event.
