Polestar Leeds and GPMU fight to secure staff

The future of 45 staff at Polestar Direct Leeds hangs in the balance as the company continues talks with the GPMU.

Both parties are looking at relocating staff to other Polestar divisions following last week's decision to close the sheetfed operation. Closure at the Leeds site was averted after it was confirmed that the web arm would continue to operate (PrintWeek, 23 September).

According to Polestar Direct Leeds managing director Geoff Mordt, both sides are looking at "every opportunity at other Polestar sites".

"We are right in the middle of discussions so I can't say exactly what numbers are involved," he said. "But if jobs are to be relocated it is likely to be at Polestar Chantry as most people would like to stay locally."

GPMU Leeds & Central Yorkshire branch secretary Brian Brock added that he was "very optimistic that there will be opportunities at Chantry".
