Polestar in discussions to stave off Kilbride closure

Hopes of saving Polestars East Kilbride plant from closure continue, with GPMU officials and senior Polestar management in discussions as PrintWeek went to press.

GPMU deputy general secretary Tony Burke said both he and Scottish union officials had met with management over the past two weeks. "We are looking to put a package together to assist and stave off closure of the site," he said.

Polestar signalled the beginning of the end for the plant last month (PrintWeek 8 April), by downsizing the operation and laying off almost half of its 208-strong workforce.

Burke said further talks between the respective parties would take place from 10 May.

A Polestar spokeswoman said that the company would not be able to comment on the situation while negotiations were ongoing.

However, she confirmed that the GPMU had put forward ideas, which were being considered.

East Kilbride's future has been the subject of debate for some time.

Polestar made 40 job cuts in 2001, when it reduced the plant's capacity by taking out two KBA web presses.
