Platinum Print eyes carbon neutral first

Yorkshire-based print and design specialist Platinum Print has recently bought a Renault 100% electric Kangoo Van Z.E, as part of its campaign to become the first carbon neutral print operation in the Yorkshire region by 2014.

The award-wining van cost Platinum around £20,000, and was chosen by the company for its zero-emission qualities, and its practical and economic benefits.

According to a Platinum statement, the van has already saved the company substantial CO2 emissions and fuel costs since it took to the road two months ago.

Production director Mark Plummer said: "With electric powered vans still taking a relatively small share of the light commercial vehicle market at present, there remains a long way to go in terms of persuading the business community this is a highly viable option when it comes to cost-efficiency and performance".

He added that the van runs for eight hours at a time and then needs to be recharged over night. "Other than that the performance and comfort is equally comparable to a fuel-driven van," he said.

Other steps Platium has previously taken to reach its carbon-neutral goal include partnering with the World Land Trust; obtaining Forest Stewardship Council certification for its product range; and the development of process-less plate production techniques.

It is also currently in discussions about how any carbon related activity can be offset through contributing positively to the environment, in ways such as tree plantation projects.
