The scheme, which will receive around 650,000 from the Leaning and Skills Council, is aimed at over 25s working in print who want the benefits of a formal qualification. NVQ level two and three qualifications will be available in any print-related subject. Around 255 places out of a total of 600 have already been taken.
The programme, which is only being run in England due to the LSC funding, is based around a network of six centres Manchester City College, Leicester College, Plymouth College of Art and Design, Leeds College, Londons Digital Academy and Matthew Boulton College in Birmingham.
Firms will pay a minimum contribution of 150 towards the fees although courses are subsidised to a minimum of 60%.
Assessors from the colleges will visit students to gauge their competence and tailor a scheme for them.
PEF chief executive Richard Beamish said: Education of the over 25s has been a bit of a Cinderella area, so until now theres been very little incentive for employers or staff.
