Overmatter: Made with British rain

“When life sends you lemons, make lemonade” – a phrase beloved of every damn upbeat optimist around the globe. We have just learned of a new variant on this theme: “When life sends you Biblical weather, make weather-related gift items.”

News reaches us of a new company, Birthday Weather, which creates “bespoke gifts using the weather charts from the British Met Office archive”.

Products include weather charts for significant dates, cards, calendars and mugs. An inexplicable bestseller is its ‘Made with British Rain’ range.

Given the British obsession with the weather, even at times when it can be considered relatively normal, this must surely be a business where, ahem, forecasts for growth can be considered suitably accurate.

With water still topping the wellies of residents in various parts of these blighted isles, the Somerset-based firm (next to a river, believe it or not, although not, at the time of typing, flooded) probably isn’t expecting a rash of orders from its neighbours in the Somerset Levels, but no matter.

Its first print run of 500 limited edition mugs sold out straight away. Quicker than Overmatter can say: “Did I just see Tomasz Schafernaker talking about a new low approaching from the Atlantic?”
