After a nervy few months involving a wall of silence from the organisers of the world’s biggest print expo, the team at the Messe have finally confirmed the wondrous news.
Whether their decision had been swayed by the outpouring of printing industry anxiety when a Drupa tune failed to appear as usual a year before the show, we don’t know.
Drupa song superfan Mark Stephenson, digital solutions product manager at Fujifilm and the man behind Facebook page The Cult of Drupa Songs, began a twitter campaign with the hashtag #DrupaSongSOS and there was a huge response, with literally almost 30 tweets about it, 29 from Stephenson himself. Just kidding, Mark.
Drupa is now asking for input on what style of music should be deployed in Dusseldorf, daily, at 10am from 31 May to 10 June next year.
As it happens, Overmatter recalls that back at Drupa 2012, Stephenson revealed that his ultimate dream was “to write the lyrics for a future Drupa song, and he is considering a pitch for 2016”.
Opportunity knocks, Mark! Get to it. And remember, the 1986 song came top in Drupa’s recent poll of past favourites, so perhaps there’s inspiration in a re-boot of that one?
