Online surfing title expands into printed magazine

Print's position as a trusted medium has spurred surfing title <i>Drift</i> to move away from a sole online presence and launch a new bi-monthly publication printed by Bristol's Doveton Press.

Drift managing editor Howard Swanwick told printweek.com the move would help the title cater for its growing readerships and broaden the publication's appeal to advertisers.

"People in the surfing sector were unsure of advertising on the digital edition of a magazine while the print version offers familiar ground. You know what you're going to get," added Swanwick.

He said: "In order to be understood more thoroughly and have a bigger impact, we simply had to move into a printed version."

Doveton Press has printed the first issue of the title, whose online counterpart experienced a 50% growth in readership to an 8,000-plus circulation.

The litho and digital firm printed the text using its B2 Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 press onto Greencoat Velvet 100gsm stock.

The cover pages were printed on Greencoat Velvet stock 250gsm using its Heidelberg Anicolor press.

The 104pp title, which was produced using low-VOC soya-based inks, was also perfect bound.

The title, published by Polestar Publishing, focuses on sustainability within the surfing industry and covers issues such as coastal management, surfboard manufacture, community projects and travel.
