According to local newspaper Boston Standard, staff were made redundant yesterday (30 July) in a meeting held at the Boston, Lincolnshire-based firm’s Horncastle Road site.
Norprint is part of the Magnadata Group, the remaining parts of which are believed to have been bought by Hull-based speciality and security printer BemroseBooth Paragon, according to various PrintWeek sources.
Norprint was acquired by Magnadata in 2006 while BemroseBooth was acquired out of administration by Paragon Group UK in 2010.
On his Facebook page, Boston and Skegness MP Matt Warman said yesterday: “The job losses at Norprint/Magnadata are bad news for Boston. Jobcentre Plus have assured me they are already working closely with all those affected who need their help.
“I will do everything I can to support people in claiming redundancy or benefits and of course in finding new positions.”
According to its website, Norprint manufactures billions of labels each year and supplies a wide range of bespoke machinery to apply these labels to end-products. It operates 30 presses running 24 hours a day.
The business serves a variety of market sectors including food, retail, security, manufacturing and the chemical industry and its customers include Tesco, Coca-Cola and Land Rover.
The company’s turnover for the year ended 30 June 2014 was £13.6m, down from £15.2m in 2013, according to its most recently filed accounts.
It made a pre-tax loss of £527,000. Directors attributed the turnover loss to “the continuing difficult economic conditions in the UK”.
Norprint had an average monthly number of employees, including directors, of 132 in 2014, down from 143 in 2013. It is not known what the most recent staff number was, or how many people have been affected by the reported closure.
Magnadata Group’s most recently filed turnover figure was £30.7m for the year ended 30 June 2013. It made a £794,000 pre-tax profit.
Calls to Norprint and Magnadata were going straight to answerphone today and BemroseBooth Paragon was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
