Eight Group pride at colleague's success

Nightmare Lego idea turns into dream come true

Scott with his creation: "the feedback from the Lego community has been overwhelming"

Eight Group postal services manager Simon Scott has achieved a claim to fame beyond his renowned mailing know-how, having become one of a select group of people to have a Lego set idea turned into an actual product.

Scott submitted his Nightmare Before Christmas Lego set design via the manufacturer’s Lego Ideas platform, where Lego fans can share their visions for future Lego sets.

It's a lengthy process that requires an idea to gain 10,000 votes from fellow Lego enthusiasts before being sent to Lego's own experts for official review.

Scott submitted his idea nearly four years ago.

“Transforming my original submission into an official retail set was a really interesting process to be part of along with Lego, Disney and Tim Burton Productions. My input was taken on board and nothing moved forward unless there was agreement between all stakeholders,” he explained.

The resulting 2,193 piece, highly-detailed set – ‘Disney Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas’ – went on global sale last week and is priced at £169.99 in the UK.

Scott become the 59th person to have their idea turned into a retail Lego set. He will receive a percentage of the sale proceeds.

A recent Instagram post from a movie and games fan account announcing the set’s release received more than one million likes.

“It’s quite the accolade in Lego circles and certainly another tick off my bucket list. The feedback from the Lego community has been overwhelming,” he added, and thanked his friends and colleagues at Eight Group for their support.

Eight Group said the business was thrilled at Scott’s success, which underscored his artistic talents and “also embodies the innovative spirit we cherish in our team”.

The firm's print wing won Printweek's Customer Service Team of the Year Award for large enterprises earlier this year.

CEO Lance Hill said: “It’s incredible what Simon has done. Lego is his hobby but it’s obviously a very serious hobby – he’s one of a select few to have achieved this. He’s definitely our go-to Lego guy!”

Hill said Scott had also made a motorised desktop label ticket rewinder from Lego that is used by his department, pictured below.
