New year's prediction: Phil Payter, PPG

PPG managing director Phil Payter gives PrintWeek his new year's predictions...

What do you think will the greatest opportunity for and threat to printers and paper merchants/mills next year?
The greatest opportunity will be picking up work from companies which, due to poor management and charging too little, have subsequently gone under. The flipside of that also happens to be the biggest threat as there is still a chance of print companies going bankrupt due to the lack of profit in jobs. Companies without substance will also find it increasingly difficult to get credit from the paper merchants.

What do you believe is the most under-recognised aspect in printing/paper merchanting/mills that is likely to become more important in 2010?
The effectiveness of print as a marketing medium. In previous years, more and more companies have turned to email marketing as it was perceived to be cheaper and more environmentally friendly. More recently, things have started to take a bit of a U-turn, particularly as printers such as ourselves are prioritising environmental issues, making print a green and more effective marketing medium.

What can the paper and print industry do to increase its profile next year?
There needs to be more focus on environmentally friendly print.

What will you do differently next year?
We will be launching high-end digital print and batched print on business stationery to enable us to offer great value to clients with smaller print runs.
